This is called direct access. In the state of Tennessee, patients have direct access to physical therapy for up to 90 consecutive days. If the patient continues to need physical therapy services following the 90 calendar days, then the patient must have consent from an appropriate physician. An exception is that the patient must be referred by the physical therapist to an appropriate physician if the patient has not made progress after 30 consecutive days. Please note: some insurance companies still require a physician’s referral prior to treatment. Contact our office for assistance in determining if you need a referral prior to physical therapy.
